Your Guide to Rome’s Hidden Gems and Must-See Landmarks
Rome is a city where the past is always present. Nothing beats the hustle of the streets, the mopeds on every corner, the hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and the ancient landmarks. This guide is for the traveler who doesn’t like a set itinerary. I’ve put together a bucket list of my favorite places, complete with tips for avoiding crowds and finding all the hidden gems. Let’s make your Roman holiday unforgettable.
1. Sunrise at Trevi Fountain
You can’t miss the Trevi Fountain, no matter how popular it is! To beat the crowds, get there at sunrise. I recommend arriving about 20 minutes before the sun comes up to capture your photos in peace before everyone else arrives. And of course, don’t forget your coins!
Once the sun is up, it’s time for breakfast. Here are my top recommendations:
Bar San Marcello
L’Antico Forno Di Fontana Di Trevi
DEROMA – Farine Romane
2. Discover this Hidden Gem: The Jewish Ghetto
Start your Roman bucket list with the Jewish Ghetto, a true hidden gem. Tucked away from the main tourist crowds, this small neighborhood is full of history and ancient landmarks waiting to be discovered.
FIND THESE HIDDEN GEMS:
Portico of Octavia
Piazza delle Cinque Scole
Marcello Theater
LOCAL FOOD RECOMMENDATION:
II Giardino Romano is a MUST for dinner. It’s tucked in the side street and where you will find the locals.
3. Pop by Galleria Sciarra
Galleria Sciarra is a hidden gem just steps from the Trevi Fountain. It’s a beautiful courtyard perfect for a little break from all the people!
4. Explore the Piazza Navona
A visit to Rome isn’t complete without seeing Piazza Navona. This beautiful square is an ideal spot for an afternoon. Come here to people-watch, sightsee, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.
LANDMARKS TO SEE:
Quattro Fiumi

Fontana del Moro
Stadio di Domiziano
Piazza di Pasquino

5. Explore Trastevere and Porta Portese Market
Trastevere is a must-see Roman neighborhood, famous for its picturesque streets and the Porta Portese Market on Sundays. It’s a great place to explore, have a coffee, and soak up the authentic Roman atmosphere!
HIGHLIGHTS:
Porta Portese Market (every Sunday morning until 2pm)
Climb the Gianicolo for an amazing view.
Visit one of the most beautiful churches in Italy, Basilica Santa Maria in Trastevere.
Walk until your feet hurt! Trastevere is a truly mesmerizing neighborhood.
6. Find the Best View at the Spanish Steps
Whether you’re a local or a tourist, the Spanish Steps are the perfect place to pause. Climb to the top for a stunning view of Piazza di Spagna and the rooftops of Rome. It truly feels like a scene from a movie!
7. Check out St. Peter’s Basilica
A visit to St. Peter’s Basilica is a jaw-dropping experience. This is the largest church in the world, and you’ll feel it from the moment you step inside. The entrance to the church is free which makes it perfect for budget travelers!
If you want to skip touring the inside of the church, just hang out in St. Peter’s Square and take in the view from the outside. It’s a fun little square to stop by and people watch!
8. Tick the Colosseum + Roman Forum + Palatine Hill off the List
There are a few touristy things you simply have to do, and the Colosseum is at the top of that list. After all, it’s one of the Seven Wonders of the World for a reason! The best part is that the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are all in the same area, making it easy to check off the bucket list!
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
There are two main ways to visit the Colosseum a self-guided visit or guided tour.
Self-Guided: If you prefer walking at your own pace and exploring on your own schedule, get a ticket and go.
Tour: If you want the full experience with in detail information and a guide to share local insights, a tour guide might be the best option for you.
BOOK TICKETS:
You can book self-guided tickets to the Colosseum here.
TIP: You can look for tour guides on Get Your Guide or Trip Advisor if you’re looking for a more authentic experience!
9. Snap a Photo of The Arch of Constantine
The Arch of Constantine is just a short walk from the Colosseum. Don’t miss this convenient and beautiful landmark—it’s the perfect spot for photos!
10. Take in the View From Victor Emmanuel II National Monument
The Victor Emmanuel II National Monument is a must-see for a reason you might not expect. Its outside is stunning, but the real highlight is the view. Make your way up to the first-level terrace where you’ll find a cafe with a panoramic view of the city—and it’s completely free to access.
11. Admire the Pantheon
The Pantheon is one of those famous spots that lives up to the hype. Its unique design is what makes it so special: the only source of light comes from a circular opening in the dome, creating a truly stunning effect inside.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
Tickets are required to enter. You can get them in person at the ticket office or online here.
12. Get Lost in the Vatican
Even if museums aren’t your thing, the Vatican is a must-see. You’ve heard about it in school and from family, and seen it on every bucket list, but it still manages to exceed all expectations. There is nothing quite like seeing the Sistine Chapel and other famous artworks in real life.
The best part about the Vatican is that you can explore at your own pace, whether you only have an hour or you want to spend six. You can see the highlights and be on your way, or take your time and see every last detail—it’s completely up to you.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
You need a ticket for the Vatican. Get your tickets in advance here.
Avoid getting tickets at the door unless you want to wait in line!
You have the option to explore the Vatican on your own or with a guided tour. Head to TripAdvisor or GetYourGuide to find the best tour for you.
13. Indulge at the Testaccio Market
Testaccio Market is a hidden gem for foodies. You will find locals chatting, fresh ingredients on display, and authentic Roman dishes! Bring your appetite!
14. Bar Hop in Picturesque Neighborhoods
There’s nothing quite like a traditional aperitivo to kick off an evening of bar hopping through authentic Roman streets. Instead of making plans, just see where the night takes you and get lost in the city’s authentic atmosphere.
The best neighborhoods to bar hop are:
Trastevere
Monti
Testaccio
TIP: If you’re staying at a hostel, ask if they organize bar crawls! It’s a great way to meet fellow travelers and find a fun group to explore with.
LOGISTICS
PLANE + TRAIN TRANSPORTATION
Rome has two airports, with the primary one being Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO).
It has a well-connected rail system that links Rome to other major cities like Milan, Florence, and Naples. The main train station is called Roma Termini.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Rome has a great transportation system including metro, buses, and trains that travel between major attractions.
I found Google Maps to be the best tool for navigating Rome’s metro and bus schedules. While most payments are contactless, you can also buy tickets at machines located near major bus and tram stops. Alternatively, tickets are available at newspaper kiosks—just be sure to have Google Translate ready!
Rome is a very walkable city! I recommend walking over public transportation because that’s how you stumble across hidden gems!
Taxis are also an option in Rome. For the best rates use the apps Uber, FreeNow, or IT Taxi.
WHERE TO STAY
Location truly makes all the difference when in Rome! While the city’s main attractions might seem scattered on a map, staying in the right neighborhood can make make or break your experience!
BEST NEIGHBORHOODS:
Centro Storico
Monti
Testaccio
When it comes to accommodation Rome offers a variety of options. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious retreat, a cozy guesthouse, a convenient apartment, or a social hostel, Rome has it all.
I recommend a minimum of three days to see the highlights of Rome. If you have the time, staying for five or six days will give you the chance to get lost and truly experience the city like a local.
TIPS FROM A BUDGET BACKPACKER
Stay at a hostel. It’s the best way to meet fellow travelers, save money on accommodation, and create lasting memories on your Roman adventure!
If you aren’t a muesum person, skip them! Don’t let the pressure of having to go inside every single museum, church, or monument get to you! Do what you want to do, not what others are telling you to do!
Remember, your trip is what you make it! If you’re not a museum person, there’s no need to feel obligated to visit every one. Prioritize your own interests and let go of the pressure to check every box—that’s how you’ll truly enjoy your time in Rome.
To save money and find better food, avoid eating at cafes and restaurants directly next to major attractions. Instead, walk a few blocks away to find better food and prices! Find the local bakeries and pizza stands for the best meals. For the ultimate budget-friendly option, grab some groceries for a picnic or a meal back at your accommodation.
You’re all set for your trip to Rome!
Have the best time and make sure you do one thing that makes you say “I love my life” each day!
